Divorcee: An Online Dating Story

“Rebecca, come over here!” Admira shouted out. Her tone hardly disguising her shock.

“What girl!” Rebecca yelled from her room.

Admira could hear her quickening steps as Rebecca’s 5 inch stiletto heels pounded the wooden floors of the apartment the two girls shared. When she finally got to the room, Rebecca walked up to the computer where the subject of her friend’s hyped up emotions starred from the screen right at them.

“This better be good Admira, Rebecca blurted out in a grumbling tone. I’m already running late for my date with Steven. What’s so important?”

“Look at this”. Admira offered her pointed finger to direct attention towards her discovery-An email entitled “Eddie has sent you a message on cupidpick.com” with a picture attached.

“No, Admira, not Eddie Maudler, on cupidpick.com?!”

Rebecca had to take a closer look to make sure.

“He just broke up with Amy not four months ago. Left the marriage with hardly any warning, broke her heart, and here he is looking for love.”

Amy was Rebecca’s cousin, who at 30 years old had decided she needed to find a mate. Then she met Eddie Maudler who seemed to have stepped right out of her dreams and into her life. He was the perfect man. But after only 2 years together, Eddie turned out to be nothing Amy had anticipated. She was left a divorcee at at 32.

“He wants to meet me Rebecca”

“What do you mean he wants to meet you? Admira, he’s a jerk!”

Rebecca, when I first met him, his profile did not have a picture, and I was skeptical at first. But how was I to know that he was Amy's 'Eddie'?

His profile seemed really interesting and the emails he sent were even better. It took me a while to respond to him, but he wouldn’t give up. After about 5 emails from him, I finally decided to take a chance and respond.

“Then what happened Admira, Rebecca asked as she stared at her accusingly. How long have you all had this secret love affair?”

“Rebecca, I resent that, Admira said, clearly offended by her friend’s statement. He’s one of a few guys I’m talking to on Cupid Pick, and we’ve only been talking to each other for a short time. I’m only now finding out who he really is after seeing this picture. How was I to know who he was? But after two straight weeks of emailing each other, we’re really feeling each other. He just seems genuine.”

“But Admira, it’s email. How romantic can an email be?” Didn’t you speak to him on the phone at least? I mean give me a break. Real Love takes a little more than that”.

"No, we've never spoken on the phone".

Rebecca drew both their attention back to the computer screen where a very happy looking Eddie stared back from his picture in the email he had sent to Admira through the dating service website.

She clicked on the “Click here to member’s profile” link. Her curiosity had gotten the better of her, and she just had to see what reeled Admira in. A recent divorced man; he was probably looking for rebound sex and what better place to find it than the internet.

His profile headline read “The Best You Ever Had”, and continued on to say “I am tall, well built. I love my women to be open, honest, and intelligent. I know how to treat a woman, and would like a woman who knows how to be a great friend and partner…”

Rebecca was beside herself.

“Tell me Admira, do men really know what they want? He had all of that and more with Amy. What a hypocrite. Admira you must end this thing with him. You’re gonna get hurt.”

“He’s already flying from Atlanta this coming weekend to see me.” Admira admitted.

“Do you hear yourself, Rebecca exclaimed. He broke Amy’s heart. What makes you think that he would not do the same to you?”

“Nobody knows exactly what happened between those two, and it’s really not fair for you to put me in this position Rebecca. I had never even met or spoke to Eddie before this, and I barely knew the two as a couple.”

“So what Admira? You’re my friend. Even if she is not your cousin too, you can have some empathy for goodness sake.”

Admira paused as she wondered whether she could say anything that wouldn’t aggravate her friend further. But she doubted it. So she just decided that the best thing was to continue to be as honest as she could.

“Look Rebecca, I’ve never felt this way about someone in such a short period of time. I have to see if there is something there. I mean already he is flying to see me. That must mean something.”

She waited briefly for a reaction, but got none. Rebecca just looked at her blankly. Maybe it was useless, but Admira continued on.

“All the while I was talking to Eddie; I didn’t know he was Amy’s ex. But now it’s too late. Maybe I’m not thinking straight, but I really want to meet with him.”

Rebecca shook her head in disbelief. “There are 1000’s of other guys on cupidpick.com, with photo profiles mind you, but you had to choose Eddie.”

“What can I say Admira, dig your own grave. You’ll deal with Amy when she finds out”

Admira was taken back by the harshness of Rebecca’s voice. Although she knew that this was certainly not the best situation she had found herself in, it wasn’t like she was going to marry the guy, she thought.

“Anyway, I’m already late for my date, Rebecca said as she proceeded to make her exit. I’ll see you later.”

Her stilettos pounded more resoundly now as she stormed out of the room.

Alone now Admira starred quietly at the image of the man she was about to meet face to face in just a few days. Her head was left crowded with thoughts of him and thoughts of her angry best friend.

It seemed as if one relationship was riding on an unsure future-the one between the friend and roommate she had known for over 1 year, while another might just be beginning.

“What’s going to happen when I meet this man?” she wondered.

As she turned off the computer screen, she felt sadness and confusion. Probably she should let him know that she knew who he was. But then she might never know if this was the real thing.

She just had to know.
